It’s time to shed our jackets and put on a pair of shorts because summer’s calling and the sun is beckoning us to play outside. You might want to place your gym membership on hold and opt to indulge in some vitamin D and exercise outdoors.
Exercising outdoors can benefit more than just your physical health. Outdoor activities can promote your social life and improve your mental well being in the long run.
If you’re not sure how to exercise outdoors, there are a number of different activities you can take part in that will allow you to explore a new environment other than your workout studio.
5 Ways to Exercise Outdoors
While running and swimming are popular activities enjoyed by many, why not explore your adventurous side and try something new?
1. Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding is an activity that works out your whole body, especially the arms and abdomen. It may seem a little daunting at first, but paddleboarding is an easy way to have fun and exercise at the same time.
During this activity, you are required to stand (or sit on your knees) on a long board and use a paddle to navigate your way through the water. Choose a safer option than the sea and find a calm lake, especially if you are a beginner.
Your body will benefit from the improved balance and control, plus it gives you a good reason to hang out with your friends.
2. Hiking
If you want to build a strong set of legs, hiking should be on your summer bucket list. Hiking can boost your cardiovascular health, improve blood sugar levels, strengthen your glutes, and improve your bone density.
The best parts about hiking are the satisfying feeling you get from accomplishing a tough hike and, of course, the beautiful view you get to enjoy when you reach the top.
Make sure you follow the hiking trail from a map or any guided signs laid out on the trail. Bring lots of water and some healthy snacks to keep you hydrated and refreshed during your exercise.
3. Beach Volleyball
Grab your volleyball, slap on some natural sunscreen, and head to the beach! Beach volleyball is a fun way to bring out your competitive spirit and earn some beach cred if you belong to the winning team.
This activity has the potential to burn around 500 calories and can tone your abs, legs, and arms, all while you burn stubborn fat!
4. Inline Skating
Dust off your old skates and take it out for a spin along the beach or at your favorite park. Not only will you increase your heart rate, but you will also work out your legs and improve your balance.
Exercise that involves an increased heart rate will build a powerful heart that is protected from heart attacks and strokes in the future.
Make sure you wear a helmet and other protective gear to reduce the risk of injury.
5. Horseback Riding
Horseback riding offers many benefits; your legs, glutes, and arms are put to work, helping you stay toned and physically fit. Horseback riding can help you improve your balance and coordination, in addition to building strong muscles at the same time.
Apart from your physical health, horseback riding can also boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Many local stables offer the opportunity to enroll in horseback riding lessons. Why not call your sibling or your best friend and learn how to ride together?
Make sure to drink enough water during and after your exercise, especially since you will be spending time outside. Apply natural sunscreen to protect your skin and wear protective gear when doing vigorous sports.
