It’s not unusual to see celebrities bulk up for their roles. Heck, it makes for some of the finest viewing pleasure which is why we’ve been stalking Channing Tatum’s Stripper-Ready Body & Jake Gyllenhaal’s Southpaw 8-Packs.

And while Magic Mike XXL, Terminator Genisys and Furious 7 had heroes of the sexy kind, the new flick Ant-Man brings with it an unconventional superhero with a lean, yet mean body type.

Having been in the theaters for just about a week, the movie continues to gain traction as the man in the blue and red suit finds his own fan following. Paul Rudd, the comedic actor known for his roles in Clueless and Anchorman 2 is as offbeat a choice, as is his spirit animal.

Needless to say, the actor really went all out to rise to the challenge and prove his mettle as a superhero. Rudd has had the toughest year as he spent most of his time prepping for the role: “I’d never exercised harder than this for an extended amount of time,” he told People.

If you are a superhero from the Marvel franchise, you can be sure that the studio will pull out all the stops. The best fitness trainers tailor-made Paul’s workouts to amp up his chest, arm, and leg muscles, but minimize his waist and body fat.

Brendan Johnston from CrossFit BMF, and New York-based trainer Richard Louis designed a routine for Rudd to make him agile and strong, with quick reflexes, so functional training was the focus. “His work ethic is relentless. He sets his mind to something and doesn’t stop till the job is done. From a strict diet, to supplementation, to working out at 5am, he never complained, he only worked,” says Brendan.

“I didn’t drink any alcohol [and] I had no carbs,” says Rudd. Well, to be fair, alcohol is a complete buzzkill when it comes to weight loss, as it causes severe bloating, has empty calories, and works as a diuretic. The sugar-overload from your mixers, and extreme dehydration can send your digestive system in a tizzy—a liberty, no actor who is weight and cardio training everyday has.

So while us mortal folks can employ little tricks to Get Our Drink On (But Hold The Calories), for the Ant-Man, the buck stops here!
