All set to ride the tide and meet his fate on 11 December is this Hemsworth brother, who looks like one of Thor’s rescue projects in his new movie. While the superhero-god avatar had Chris become all lean and strong for Thor, his role as a sailor In The Heart Of The Sea chipped 15lb of his already sculpted physique.
Just 500 calories a day. Yes, that’s it. That’s what the actors resigned themselves to, in order to fit the part. “When you’re already starting off lean, it’s brutal to chew through that kind of weight. Every pound feels like a kilogram,” Hemsworth told Entertainment Weekly.
That’s like giving someone 100g of pan-fried bacon to survive through the day. Oh, bacon… sigh. Anywho, to play the shipwrecked starving seamen, the actors went batshit crazy and obsessed about how little they ate every day. “That’s all we spoke about. You’ve got 15 burly blokes on the sea and all we talked about was our diet, and who’d lost more weight, and who’s looking really skinny. It’s ridiculous!”
Well, it really is. But then again, this isn’t the first time an actor would’ve drastically altered their body weight to play a part in a movie. Matthew McConaughey dropped 38lb for The Dallas Buyer’s Club; Bradley Cooper gained 40lb muscle mass for American Sniper; and, needless to say, Renee Zellweger has immortalized Bridget Jones as she yo-yo’d 30lb up and down the scale, over and over again.
Now, of course, we don’t recommend you eat just 500 calories a day; not unless you’re being paid about $5 million to do it like Chris is.
