When you think weight loss, your mind makes associations immediately with diet, exercise and calories. You work out a fitness program with your nutritionist and trainer, and you begin the daunting task of losing weight. You’re definitely not thinking about your pee. Naturally, why would you?

But apparently paying attention to your pee as a weight-loss method is a real thing. Let’s explain. The pee strip diet, as the name suggests, requires you to monitor your alkaline or pH levels, by simply peeing on a strip.

Pees In A Pod
It would seem this new trend has gained traction after celebrities like Kelly Ripa, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston and Elle Macpherson admitted to monitoring their pee. Why? Apparently, this crazy-popular alkaline diet is said to turn your body into a fat-burning machine by keeping your body’s level of acidity at a seven on a scale of zero (extremely acidic) to 14 (extremely alkaline).

To do this, the pee dieters watch what they eat. The diet bans dairy, meat, eggs, grains, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, alcohol, coffee, and soda—basically everything any other diet would ban. What you can eat? Fruits, nuts, legumes, and vegetables! Again, these are foods recommend by virtually every other diet.

Piss Off, You Crazy Fad!
Experts have warned against it and here’s why:

  • Apparently, since the diet restricts the intake of protein received through animals, you’re not only going to lose fat, you’ll lose muscle mass too.
  • The question of balancing the pH and alkaline levels in the body, well, that’s simply going to be rendered moot. If you’re wondering why, it’s because your body is designed to balance the pH levels on its own, keeping it between 7.35 and 7.45, if your kidney is functioning properly.

So, does the pee strip diet make sense? We think you should leave the pee strips for when you’re trying to get pregnant, or worried that you might me. Otherwise, we’re sure another diet is going to come and grab your attention soon enough. After all, it’s fashionable to be on a fad diet (eye-roll).
