Relaxation doesn’t come naturally to all of us. In fact, most of us find it difficult to forget about our worries and stress. However, a simple practice can target your stress and put your mind at ease. This simple yet effective practice is yoga.

It is important to take a step back from your schedule and give time to yourself. Whether it’s for an hour, or even just 15 minutes, the time you put towards destressing your mind and body, will go a long way with your health and mental well-being.

4 Yoga Poses to Promote Calm

The beauty of yoga is that you can practice it anywhere you like. Here are 5 yoga poses that can help you relax.

1. Child’s Pose

Child’s pose will open up the hips and give you a deep stretch all over. This pose is extremely effective in reducing stress and feelings of fatigue. Practice this pose after a long day of work to get yourself ready for a good night’s sleep.

Directions:

  • When sitting on your hands and knees, take a generous bend forward, with your arms extended outwards towards the front of your mat.
  • Your knees will be spread apart while your big toes will come together to touch.
  • Stretch to the top of the mat and then slowly move your hands to the right side of the mat, and pause for 5 seconds.
  • Bring your hands back to the center followed by slowly moving it to the left side and pause for 5 seconds.
  • Once you come back to the center of your mat, you have the option to lay in this position for as long as you wish.

2. Legs up the Wall

Legs up the wall pose is not only easy to do but comes with many benefits. This pose can help with soreness in the legs and ankles, as well as reduce swelling and irritation. Legs up the wall is also known to help the nervous system and promote sleep.

Directions:

  • Make sure to have a wall or a tall structure that you can lean on.
  • Lay on your back and slowly extend your legs towards the ceiling as you turn towards the wall.
  • Rest your extended legs on the walls and spread your arms apart to get into a comfortable position.
  • Lay in this position for 15 seconds and feel all your stress and worry start to disappear.

3. Supine Twists

Supine twists stretch the back muscles and the glutes. It’s an extremely beneficial pose to promote digestion and stimulate the kidneys and intestines.

Your abdominal muscles are massaged and strengthened, and your spine is realigned and relaxed when you practice this pose.

Directions:

  • You will need some space in order to really stretch during this pose.
  • Start by lying on your back with your arms and legs extended.
  • If you wish to start on the right side, bend your right knee towards your chest and pause for 4 seconds.
  • Slowly cross your right knee over your left leg making sure your shoulders are touching the ground.
  • You can look towards the right side or at the ceiling and extend your arms to get comfortable.
  • Pause for a few seconds and come back into starting position before performing the exercise using the alternate leg.

4. Corpse Pose

Corpse pose or Savasana is a simple yet challenging pose that is extremely effective in lowering blood pressure, combat headaches, and promote relaxation.

Directions:

  • As you lie on your mat, spread your arms and legs apart and try to keep still for five minutes.
  • Keep your eyes closed and focus on yourself and all the positive energy that surrounds you.

We all need to relax now and then, and taking time off to focus on ourselves is the first step towards a calmer state of mind.
