A decade ago, not many Americans had even heard of gluten. Today, a survey says that almost a third of our population is trying to avoid this protein found in wheat. But is it just a passing fad, or is it really good for health?
In today’s episode of What Would Julieanna Do, host Julieanna Hever talks about a gluten-free life. Here’s what you should know about it.
What Is A Gluten-Free Diet?
A gluten-free diet is a diet that excludes foods containing gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, malts and triticale. It is used as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent, often as “dextrin”. A gluten-free diet is the only medically accepted treatment for celiac disease, the related condition dermatitis herpetiformis, and wheat allergy.
In patients with celiac disease, also spelled coeliac disease, gluten injures the lining of the small intestine. This injury can result in weight loss, bloating, diarrhea, gas, abdominal cramps, and/or vitamin and mineral deficiencies. When patients totally eliminate gluten from the diet, the lining of the intestine has a chance to heal and the person will stop having any symptoms.
But apart from being a life sustaining diet for people with celiac disease and gluten-sensitivity, it has a number of other health benefits too. For instance, it will compel you to pay serious attention to your diet, thus making you eat healthy. It could also help promote weight loss and aid healthy digestion.
Things To Keep In Mind Before You Go Gluten-Free:
Whatever may be your reason to go gluten-free, remember that removing gluten from the diet is not easy. Grains are used in the preparation of many foods. Some food may contain small amounts of gluten, although they may not specify this on the list of ingredients. And it can be difficult to eat in restaurants, where contamination can occur.
So, if you thought being gluten-free meant skiping all the bread on the menu, then you’ve only discovered the tip of the iceberg. Check out these six disclaimers for people leading a gluten-free life.
There are also several myths surrounding the gluten-free phenomenon, such as many people think this diet is a great weight loss diet. However, not all of it may be true, find out the truth behind these common myths here.
