They say everything tastes better with bacon, and rightly so. Several food products today are flavored with this delicious, cured meat. If you’re a fan of bacon ice cream, bacon-infused vodka, bacon soap, or just about anything with bacon, you’d be interested to know that it actually contains 18 different ingredients, including an element called umami.

The word umami is Japanese for the fifth flavor element (after sweet, salty, sour and bitter). It describes a flavor that is meaty and savory. It is particularly addictive, and triggers a neurochemical response upon eating. Bacon is said to have six different types of umami, so now you know why you can’t get enough of it.

Author Arun Gupta of The Indypendent also states that bacon has a very high flavor profile, making it a unique one-of-a-kind food, with no other flavor substitutes.
