It’s common knowledge that smoking is a bad habit and can cause long term health damage. But recent studies show that drinking three to four cans of diet soda per day, can be more dangerous than smoking a pack of cigarettes. Although diet soda contains fewer chemicals than cigarettes, it chokes the cells and mutates DNA at a higher rate. This could lead to chronic disorders of the digestive track, breakdown of the central nervous system, and the development of cancerous tumors.

Artificial sweeteners fool the body into ingesting them, as if they are food, after which they pollute the organs with mutagens. Some studies show that the body never excretes all of the aspartame, sorbitol, sucralose or saccharin present in diet sodas. When you consume Equal, Splenda, Nutrasweet or Sweet-n-Low, cleansing organs like the liver, kidneys and pancreas get overloaded. Other studies say that synthetic sugars contain synthetic carcinogens, which cause central nervous system disorders and make you hungrier.

The next time you reach for diet soda, think about the effect it has on your body, and choose a healthier option instead.
