Whole wheat or whole grain products are generally healthier than those made from refined grains. That’s because all the parts including the nutritious germ and bran are used while processing them, unlike refined grains. Eating such food is associated with reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and digestive problems.

Multigrain products are popularly assumed to be healthy as they are made from a blend of grains. However, not all of these grains may be the whole variety. Many products use refined grains too in their blend. These grains go through the refining process and lose almost all the germ and bran, and are left with the endosperm. These products have lesser nutritional value than whole grains.

The only way you can make sure that you don’t end up with something made of refined grains is to read the ingredients thoroughly before purchasing it.
