The most abundant mineral in the body, calcium plays a vital role in maintaining strong bones and teeth. Its role, however, is not just limited to this; calcium is also required by the body for various other processes such as blood clotting, early developmental growth, muscular contracting and relaxation. It also keeps your blood pressure in check.

Although calcium can be easily obtained from various food sources such as leafy greens, dairy products, seeds, nuts and fish, a lack in the efficient absorption of this mineral can cause a deficiency. Here are six signs that point to a calcium deficiency.

1. Muscle Spasms
If you suffer from frequent muscle spasms and cramps followed by muscle aches especially in the thighs and calf muscles, it’s a clear indication of low calcium levels. (Related Article: 4 Ways To Beat Muscle Pain This Winter)

2. Confusion & Memory Loss
A severe calcium deficiency can affect the functions of the nervous system and cause mental confusion, hallucinations, delusions and, in extreme cases, memory loss. Calcium deficiency can also result in mood changes, which can eventually lead to depression. (Related Article: Tips To Boost Your Memory Naturally)

3. Cardiac Arrhythmia
Abnormal heart rhythm complemented with a drop in blood pressure is another classic symptom of low calcium levels. Difficulty in breathing, fatigue, swelling of the ankles and feet (edema) can also be seen.

4. Skin Problems
If you have an underlying calcium deficiency, your skin may become unusually dry and coarse. You may also notice symptoms for eczema, dermatitis, petechiae (bleeding under the skin forming tiny red dots) or purpura (large bruised areas). 5. Tooth Decay
Since calcium is important for strong teeth, low levels of this nutrient can make you more prone to toothache and decay. It can also increase your risk of other periodontal diseases. (Related Article: 9 Herbs To Get Healthy Teeth & Gums)

6. Brittle Nails

If you are see any or all of the above symptoms, get your calcium levels checked. Calcium deficiency can be easily corrected with appropriate dietary measures.
