As we delve further into spring, allergies become more of a problem for seasonal allergy sufferers. A runny nose and itchy eyes are just a couple of the bothersome allergy symptoms one can experience during this transitional season. Stave off the unpleasant symptoms that come with spring by using some favorite adaptogens as a natural remedy.

What Are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens, or adaptogenic herbs, are a group of herbal compounds that help boost the immune system in the body and promote homeostasis (the balance of bodily functions). They are generally considered non-toxic and safe to use, though like any natural remedy, can cause side effects in certain individuals.

Adaptogens are typically encouraged for their stress-reducing effects, helping individuals fight off both physical and psychological symptoms of stress. A small handful of adaptogens  can also be beneficial for alleviating symptoms related to spring allergies.

5 Adaptogens to Take for Spring Allergies

With spring comes changes in both the temperature and environment, which can easily induce allergies in those prone to suffering from seasonal allergies. The following adaptogens can be used as an effective way to prevent or treat spring allergies:

1. Ashwagandha

Also known as winter cherry, Ashwagandha is known as a powerful adaptogen in India. It is used for a variety of ailments, but its immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory qualities are its most useful traits when it comes to treating seasonal allergies.

The adaptogen also tends to have a normalizing effect on the body, specifically helping with hypo and hyper immune conditions in the body.

2. Ginseng

This adaptogen, also known as red ginseng, is said to have anti-allergic properties. It has been reported as beneficial in warding off asthma and atopic dermatitis, common allergy symptoms.

Other studies also show promising evidence for ginseng’s ability to relieve or reduce the effect of allergic rhinitis, which is an allergic response to inhaled allergens.

3. Holy Basil

Also known as sweet Thai basil, this adaptogen has anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties. It’s reported that holy basil has the ability to affect histamine’s H2 receptor, and can be as effective as Zantac (a pharmaceutical drug) in allergy inhibition.

4. Goji Berries

For thousands of years, goji berries have been used as a healing adaptogen in Asia. Chinese scientists have found that goji berries can reduce antibodies that have been formed in response to an allergen.

More than that, Chinese scientists believe that the polysaccharides in goji berries can improve immune function and restore a healthy balance to the immune system.

5. Ginger

The same way in which ginger is believed to help cold symptoms, including respiratory problems and sore throat, this adaptogen can also alleviate symptoms related to seasonal allergies. Ginger is considered anti-inflammatory and can calm inflamed throat muscles and respiratory issues that result from allergies.

Ginger is also believed to have analgesic properties, meaning it can help relieve any minor pains and aches associated with your allergy symptoms.

Using Adaptogens to Treat Allergies

Adaptogens are generally considered non-toxic, however, it’s important to talk to your doctor about using them before you actually try them out. Certain adaptogens can cause serious side effects if proper usage is not followed.

Adaptogens can also cause unwanted side effects if they are used while dealing with other health conditions or while taking certain medications.
