Brushing-Your-Toddler’s-Teeth (1)

Q: What’s the best way to get my toddler to start brushing her teeth and let me help her brush her teeth?
A: Like many parenting challenges, you might have the greatest success in getting your toddler to brush her/his teeth by making it fun.  Some ideas?  Try brushing together.  Toddlers love to imitate.  Show your toddler what to do in a fun way – brush left, brush right, make a funny face.  Stick out your tongue and brush again.  Try singing a special song when you brush or searching for funny animals in your child’s mouth (with appropriate animal sounds) each time you brush.  Let your child pick out a special toothbrush – or several – that they can use each time or choose on different days.  Before you know it, your child will be looking forward to brushing instead of fighting it!   Also be sure to choose a safe, non-toxic toothpaste for your child.  Many contain potentially dangerous chemicals such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and parabens, among others.
