You probably have never heard of Diatomaceous earth (DE) before and although the name sounds like a dwarf planet, chances are we’ve consumed or used plenty of products that contain it throughout our lifetime.

DE is derived from the fossilized remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. Diatoms are over 30 million years old and are formed by the binding of microscopic algae-like plant remains into the earth’s surface.

These clay-like remains are found in a form of a white siliceous powder known as Diatomaceous earth. Often used as a bug repellant, research now suggests that it’s a powerful natural tool that can propose a plethora of benefits that cleanses you from the inside out.

Health Benefits of Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth has been used in many applications in the cosmetic, cleansing, and agricultural industries. It has been extensively studied and some pretty interesting benefits have been discovered because of it.

1. Detoxifies the Body

Diatomaceous earth acts as a natural detoxifying agent within our body that kills parasites and viruses that can cause illnesses while also purifying our blood. The reason behind its detoxification capabilities is DE’s silica content.

Diatomaceous Earth contains a high source Silica which is a mineral compound that can neutralize and remove free radical damage from the body through sweat, feces, and urine, resulting in lower oxidative damage and anti-aging effects.

2. Strengthens Bones, Joints, and Ligaments

Silica within DE is beneficial for bone, connective tissue, and preventing low bone mass. It helps with normal metabolism and joint formation while helping with the synthesis of collagen. While more research is still needed, studies have suggested that the silica component within DE can be used to help support metabolic processes, prevent bone disorders, and preserve joint health.

Since diatomaceous earth contains natural exfoliating properties, it is used in many toothpaste, skin scrubs, polishes, and deodorants. Like other clays like bentonite clay, DE can dry out dangerous toxins while leaving behind healthy and smooth skin. It also proposes anti-aging effects because of the calcium present to help promote strong bones, teeth, and nails.

4. Strengthens Heart Health

Studies have proven that food-grade diatomaceous can offer benefits to help stabilize cholesterol levels and promote heart health. Diatomaceous earth contains trace minerals like calcium, sodium, magnesium, iron, and silicon that all play an essential role in maintaining heart health and building and repairing our bones and muscles.

5. Natural Source of Silica

Diatomaceous earth is composed of approximately 85% silica.  For those who were unaware, silica is an important trace mineral that our tendons, blood vessels, cartilage, and bones need. Silica even contributes to almost every vital organ including our liver, lungs, and heart.
