The very first US FDA-approved drug to boost female libido, Addyi hit American markets yesterday, providing relief to hundreds of women who suffer from low sexual desire but never come out with it in the open.

However, the drug was under a lot of speculation, especially because of the health implications that it can produce. Seems like Addyi is a daily drug that women can take to boost their sexual desire, especially those who are dealing with hypoactive sexual desire disorder. We tell you how Addyi works and the side effects it can trigger.

How Does It Work?
The whole idea of female viagra originated from the fact that pre-menopausal women suffer from a lack of sexual desire. Nearly seven percent of pre-menopausal women suffer from a condition called hypoactive sexual desire disorder, a sexual dysfunction which is characterized as a lack or absence of sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity.

Women who took part in three clinical trials had an average of two to three of what they defined as “sexually satisfying events” per month. Once they started taking the drug, the number of such events increased.

The Benefits
While viagra improves blood flow to the genitals and helps treat erectile dysfunction, flibanserin (sold under the trade name Addyi) works on the brain by influencing the level of certain chemicals (or neurotransmitters) such as serotonin and dopamine in the brain. It must be taken once a day at bedtime and will take four weeks to eight weeks to produce results.

Flibanserin works by correcting an imbalance of the levels of the neurotransmitters that affect sexual desire. More specifically, flibanserin increases dopamine and norepinephrine, both responsible for sexual excitement, and decreases serotonin, responsible for sexual inhibition. Clinically, it has shown some encouraging results and has been found to increase the frequency of satisfying sexual events and enhance sexual desire.[1,3]

The Side Effects
Many reports suggest that Addyi can trigger side effects such as low blood pressure and fainting, both of which were reported quite frequently in the women who participated in the clinical trials. Besides these, the women in the clinical trials also reported dizziness, nausea, fatigue and somnolence, typical of a centrally acting drug.  [1,2]

The Journal Of American Medical Association also points out that drinking alcohol while on flibanserin may result in severely low blood pressure. It must also not be taken by women dealing with liver disorders or those who are on medication or other herbal supplements [14].
