To all those who love Scandal (so basically, everyone on earth!), the leading lady is creating a stir of a different kind with her red carpet ensembles, perfect hair, spot-on makeup looks, and all that.
The truth is, there’s not a lot of primping required when what you’ve got to work with is damn right stunning already. That said, Washington’s personal stylist of 12 years, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, shares some deets on her list of dos and don’ts for Kerry’s natural hair.
Texture-Wise: The best thing is to work with the natural texture of your hair instead of manipulating it with heating tools. This means, no hair relaxers for Kerry’s curls, save for when she’s on the show and needs a straighter do.
Best Hair Practices: Washington gets a trim every two months, so raggedy locks and split-ends have no place to hide or thrive.
Red Carpet Style: The actress loves the fishtail braid; in fact, most A-listers are opting for plaits and braids of some sort, to keep it clean and y.
Beauty Must-Have: Water! Sip on it every chance you get; Kerry sure does.
For healthy hair, Washington uses a shampoo and leave-in conditioner that suits her hair type, and wears a hat when she’s out and about so that the sun does not dry out the hair.
Our Tip: Traveling can damage your hair, tangle your strands, and leave your tresses all dried out. First off, always use a wide-tooth comb to remove the knots in your hair. And better still, keep your hair in an up-do, preferably in a bun when you’re traveling. If you wish to keep it down, use a scarf as cover till you reach your destination. Also, hair sunscreens are a god-sent!
Kerry shampoos thoroughly to get rid of the residue and the dirt build-up.
Our Tip: Use a clarifying shampoo, once every two weeks. It has a high surfactant-to-water ratio, which helps deep clean your hair. This type of shampoo essentially strips your hair of all the remaining oil and build-up, which is why, if you have excessively dry hair, you need to first try it out and see if it works for you. Here’s a step-by-step on how to use it.
Kerry also uses a deep recovery mask to repair the damage from styling products
Our Tip: Indulge in an at-home deep conditioning treatment, once a week, or try this natural hair mask—mix 3tbsp extra virgin olive oil with 2 eggs, and apply the blend to your hair. Keep it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. Using this mask twice a month will leave your tresses looking shinier, and your strands feeling stronger.
With that in mind, are you ready to be a head turner like Olivia Pope?
