As the season transitions into Fall, the humidity in the air drops, and your skin and hair get visibly drier. From cracks and crevices to flaky residue, there are multiple red flags that signal the need for some extra nourishment and hydration. One of these signs include the flaking of the scalp, compounded with a need to scratch that itch despite maintaining good hygiene on a day-to-day basis.
Don’t worry your shampoo is still doing a good job and this irritant is not a result of excess dirt. In fact, in all likelihood your shampoo is working overtime and drying out your already dehydrated scalp, where the sebum levels are off balance and the oil production is reduced. Don’t mistake it for dandruff. This seasonal beauty woe can be tackled with ease, using three simple at-home DIYs that are economical, too:
Deep Conditioning: Measure out 3-4tbsp coconut oil in a bowl and stir well. The heat generated from the mixing will give the oil a smoother texture. Add 1tbsp jojoba oil and continue to stir until the mixture is even and well-combined. Now, add 3 drops of your favorite essential oil. Stir all the ingredients together until they form a thick, oily mixture. Apply to the hair from roots to ends, particularly lapping it up directly on to the scalp.
Cover your hair and scalp with a shower cap and use a hair dryer to introduce heat to the area for 2-4 minutes. Leave the wrap on for 15-30 minutes before you wash and condition your hair as you normally would. Feel free to make this a weekly practice.
Hair Mask: Take 1/2 cup yogurt and add 3tbsp of either coconut, castor, olive or sunflower oil. Apply it to the roots for about 30 minutes, for a nourishing and hydrating effect. Wash with a mild shampoo afterwards.
Rinse Scalp: Use apple cider vinegar as a rinse in between your shampoo and conditioning routine. All you need to do is mix the vinegar with water and apply it to your scalp. Leave it on for five minutes, rinse and condition. The apple cider vinegar will get rid of flakes and any build-up as it works like a clarifying shampoo. However, it is important to follow this up with a thorough conditioning routine to restore the nutrients that were stripped.
Additionally, amp up your water intake and include foods with good fatty acids and omega 3 in your diet to get to the root of the problem; think nuts, salmon, cod, flaxseeds, etc.
