5 Shoes To Own Before You're 30

by Charlene Flanagan
Marilyn Monroe once said, "Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world." When you're developing your wardrobe, it's important to get your shoe basics down. These five shoe essentials are perfect for work, play, and lazy days.

1. Black Pumps

For your first investment, find yourself a pair of basic black pumps. Everything about this look is classic. Black pumps are easy to pair with a skirt suit, pantsuit, or even a cocktail dress, and they tie almost any outfit together. Choose the heel height you're most comfortable with, because pumps look elegant no matter how tall or short they stand.

2. Must-Have Nudes

Second only to your basic black pumps are nude heels in their various silhouettes. Nudes are extremely versatile and add an element of class to your look. They are a favorite among celebrities for red carpet events and for good reason; they're close to your skin tone and they create the illusion of longer legs. Also, nudes are being rolled out in funkier styles, like faux snakeskin prints, honey-comb designs, and threaded details. These are definitely our favorites from the lot.

3. Wedge Heels

A refined version of the chunky platform (which has padding right through the base of the shoe), the arch of a wedge heel has a steeper drop with not as much cushion under the toe area. This gives it the feminine look of a stiletto, but the comfort of a platform; a win-win for those who don't feel too comfortable in high heels. Great for all-day wear, this one's a fun alternative to flat sandals in the summers.

4. Thong Flats/Sandals

Sometimes it's good to be down to earth - especially on lazy weekend days that you're on your feet for long hours. Always invest in a pair of flat sandals for regular use because they're the most comfortable of the lot. Go with the thong strap version because it has a better grip, won't give you unsightly tan lines, and is more delicate and feminine looking than the cage-style uppers.

5. Peep-Toe Kitten Heels

We've spoken about the hazards of high heals, so if you're concerned about your knees or will be on your feet all day, invest in a pair of barely-there kitten heels. They rank high on the style quotient, are easy on the feet, and work great for those with a broad sole and long toenails. A class act in every sense, grab a pair of peep-toe kitten heels for those dance parties, or even for a long day at work.
