War Paint: Should You Go Organic Or Vegan For Your Nails?

by Trina Remedios

When it comes to beauty, natural and organic are two aspects that feature on the top of most checklistswhether its skincare, lipsticks, makeup or nourishment for your tresses. And, it would seem that theres now a growing demand for natural, low-chemical and gentle nail polish.According to the Mintel Nail Color and Care US 2015 report published back in April, 67 percent of nail art addicts are on the lookout for non-toxic lacquers that also provide some TLC. Call it a vegan diet for the nails, if you will. That said, organic and vegan nail paints are not all the same. Though they are both non-toxic contenders, they have their differences and one is definitely better than the other.

Organic NailPaint Vegan NailPaint
Composition:
They do not contain harmful toxins that are otherwise present in traditional nail polishesformaldehyde (can cause cancer and irritation of the throat, ears and skin), dibutyl phthalate (can cause fertility problems) and toluene (can cause liver, kidney and brain damage). You should watch out for parabens, phthalates, solvents (ethyl acetate and butyl acetate), nitrocellulose, acetone and heavy metals, too. There are multiple organic nail paints that are free from camphor, formaldehyde resin, xylene, and parabens, just take the time and effort to read the label.
Composition:
For the eco-sensitive lass, this is the preferred lot. Vegan nail lacquers aren't tested on animals, neither do they have animal-based ingredients. Guanine is obtained from fish scales and is used to add shimmer to the polish. Carmine provides a scarlet hue, which is produced by boiling and crushing beetles. Lastly, oleic acid is an animal oil which is used as a thickening agent. Vegan nail polishes are also free from formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate.
Shortcomings:
It does not last as long as traditional nail polish, even in storage. Also, it chips a lot faster.
Drawbacks Of Vegan Nail Polish:
Given that it is devoid of the additives that make it look glamorous, vegan nail paints don't look quite as luxurious, and yes, also chip faster.

Karma Naturals, Piggy Polish, Zoya, Honeybee Gardens, Priti NYC
Brands We Love:
LVX, RGB, SpaRitual, Zoya, Ginger + Liz, Priti NYC
Verdict:
Though both variants are free from harmful toxins, vegan nail polishes are animal-friendly. Take a permanent sabbatical from toxins that are just eating into the fabric of your nailsand making them brittle.
