Fast Five: Surprising Uses Of Toothpaste

by Shruti Shukla

We are well aware of the role toothpaste plays in cleaning and maintaining the health of our pearly whites. But did you know that it has some more uses around the house? A sudden emergency of spilled soda pop or an empty hair gel tube—it’s toothpaste to the rescue. Read on to find out more.

1. Jewelry Polish: Toothpaste can give your jewelry a good shine. It works best for diamond and silver.
How To Use: Apply some toothpaste on your jewelry using your hands, wait until it dries and then wash gently with water. You can leave on it overnight for better results.

2. Carpet Stain Remover: Soda, coffee, or paint stains, no matter what’s ruining the perfect look of your carpet, toothpaste can help clear it.
How To Use: Apply some toothpaste on the stain and rub it with the help of a brush until the stain disappears. Wipe it with a damp cloth later.

3. To Clean Leather: Toothpaste can also be used to clean your leather shoes and bags without spoiling their texture and natural shine.
How To Use: Dab a small amount of toothpaste on your leather item and rub it gently with a soft cloth. Wipe it off later with a damp cloth. Use only a non-gel variety for your leather.

4. Hair Gel: Toothpaste contains the same water-soluble polymers found in hair gels and hence can be used in the same way (if you have no other option, really).
How To Use: Add a pea-sized amount of toothpaste in 1/3 cup of water. Stir it till the paste dissolves completely and apply it as a normal hair gel. Don’t forget to wash your hair at the end of the day, or else it might leave a sticky residue, or make your hair dry.

5. Pimple Remedy: Toothpaste contains ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and triclosen which absorb water from the skin, leaving the pimple dry. This makes it look less noticeable and promotes quicker healing.
How To Use: Apply a little amount of toothpaste on the affected area, just enough to cover it. Leave it overnight and wash your face in the morning. Moisturize your skin with lotion. Use plain white toothpaste, as colored or flavored toothpaste might irritate your skin.
