How I Found My Fido: Sweet, Quirky Hattie Mae

I live in Los Angeles with a couple of friends from college. My roommate Carrie owns a tiny blonde-haired mystery mutt named Hattie Mae, who is one of the sweetest and quirkiest creatures I’ve ever met or lived with. At this point, I consider her "my" Fido as well as my roommate's — and the story of how we all came together involves a rescue, a runaway, an unexpected pregnancy, and luckily, a happy ending. Here's the story of how we found our Fido, Hattie Mae:

Hattie Mae's Mother Was A Rescue Dog

Two years ago, my two roommates took a walk near their home in Echo Park, a lively arts neighborhood in East Los Angeles. Strolling near the infamous 101 freeway, the pair spotted an aimless dog dodging fast moving cars. She was small, with short black fur and a whitish-blonde face. The roommates saved her from the busy street and took her home. Falling in love immediately with the seemingly-young pup, and with no indication that it had a previous owner, they decided to keep her. They fittingly named her "Echo."

At One Point, Hattie Mae's Mother Echo Ran Away

About a year into their journey with Echo, my roommates were still head over heels in love with her. Unfortunately, their schedules and impending house-lease expiration had them feeling like ill-equipped parents.

One day Echo ran away, sending a shock through both of them. After finding her, they decided to try and find a more suitable home. Their friend, my roommate Carrie, grew up in LA and her mom lived nearby. When news traveled, Carrie’s mom agreed to take Echo in.

Echo, Hattie Mae's Mother, Became Unexpectedly Pregnant

Shortly after taking in the already-rescued pooch, Carrie’s mom discovered the dog’s hidden secret: She was pregnant. The general consensus is that she conceived that day she ran away, but nobody knows for sure.

She went on to have three gorgeous pups, one of whom was Hattie Mae — named after a famous character Carrie's father had written.

Hattie Mae's Life Today

One of Hattie Mae’s strangest and most lovable characteristics is that she loves licking. She will lick your hand for as long as you let her (literally, hours could pass!). It’s adorable and so uniquely her. When she finds me on the couch with a heavy intent to slobber, it’s both funny and a reminder of what a miraculous series of events—where people saved Echo purely out of the goodness of their hearts—took place for her to eventually be with us.

Carrie will always be her mama, but I’m grateful to be part of the family and to be part of this crazy tale of how one Fido found her home.
