#NationalDogDay: How You Can Help Dogs In Need

by Ajableu Oldham
We love any excuse to celebrate dogs, and National Dog Day is one of our favorites — but this holiday isn't about squealing over puppy videos (though we love them too!). It's about recognizing the amount of dogs that end up in shelters each year and are in desperate need of a good home. Z Living's upcoming show Finding Fido (premiering November 15) is about matching up people with the right pooch, saved from a shelter, to help alleviate this very problem. Check out the below video of Finding Fido show host Seth Casteel's work through the organization One Picture Saves A Lifehelping groom and photograph shelter dogs, and ultimately helping save their lives:

Casteel has worked alongside shelters across the United States to provide humane societies with photo equipment and grooming tools to take better photographs of animals in search for homes. The results of his efforts are astounding and deeply touching. A dog who once appeared sooty and abandoned comes to life in his adoption photo, increasing his chances of finding an owner and lifelong companion.

Shelters are forced to euthanize over 1 million dogs each year

According to Aspca.org, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized each year in shelters. Often these dogs are euthanized due to the unfavorable conditions in which they arrive. After living on the street, these dogs (and cats) are often disoriented, disheveled, dirty, and in need of love and care.

Shelters do not always have the resources to properly care for the animals, despite their best efforts to get these pups homes. The adoption photos that are taken often do not properly show off the animal’s attributes, and it becomes too challenging to find a good dog a good home.

So, what can you do to help?

Z Living is celebrating National Dog Day, alongside Seth Casteel and his foundation One Picture Saves A Life and GreaterGood.org. National Dog Day celebrates all breeds, pure and mixed, and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues and pure breed rescues.
We encourage you to check out these amazing organizations or you local shelters, and find out how you can help. If you're a photographer, consider offering your spare time to organizations that need assistance photographing their pups.
Or, check out Greater Good’s A Shot At Life Program, and find out how you can give to the organization. A donation of just $10 can vaccinate just 5 animals.
