Feng shui practitioners see the kitchen as a metaphor for a person’s well-being. The more warm, welcoming, clean and efficient your kitchen, the healthier you’ll be.
Here is a brief list of dos and don’ts to help you give your kitchen the best feng shui possible.
Kitchen Feng Shui Dos
The following tips with help you bring out the best in your kitchen:
- The kitchen should be spacious, airy and full of lights. This makes it look lively and welcomes chi energy.
- Any pastel is a good color for your kitchen, but the best color of all is white (because white represents the metal element).
- The sink should always be in the east, and the refrigerator/freezer shouldn’t face the kitchen door.
- Directions like north, east or southeast are best suited for the kitchen, as these represent the fire element.
- Make sure that you have a clear view of the entrance while you cook. If your stove faces the wall, position a mirror so that it reflects the entrance. Even a shiny kettle on the stove can do the job, since its reflective surface will alert you to any movement behind you.
- The stove should be kept clean and in fully working condition.
Kitchen Feng Shui Don’ts
Keep trouble out of your kitchen by following these guidelines:
- Don’t use a microwave in your kitchen. Most experts believe it to be disruptive of the room’s chi.
- If you feel that you must have a microwave, don’t install it directly over the stove
- Don’t leave water on the stove for long periods of time. It can cause depression. Empty the kettle when you’re done using it.
- Don’t store heavy or bulky items overhead. This will make you feel overwhelmed. If you have to store your pots and pans in an overhead rack, hang the rack in a place where you won’t be working or sitting beneath it.
On the Cheap
Feng shui doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some low-cost tips:
- Remember that every unlucky design or placement has a feng shui cure. If, for example, your appliances are placed in a way that is considered unlucky, you can lay out a green rug on the floor to act as a natural “conflict barrier.”
- Hang a wind chime or bell near the doorway or above the cook’s area. In feng shui, the wind chime and bell summon positive chi. they also act as alarms, and will alert the cook to intrusion!
- Keep one junk drawer in the kitchen. Invest in one of those drawer inserts that has lots of different compartments for string, spare keys, batteries, superglue and whatever else you want to throw in there.
- Want to lose weight? Start cleaning. Kitchen clutter can manifest itself in your life as excess weight. If you want to keep the pounds off, get the clutter out of your cabinets, cupboards and drawers.
