Podcasts We Love: TED’s Radio Hour

by Simona Terron
In this fifth part of our series on Podcasts We Love, we bring you TED’s Radio Hour.

What is TED?
Technology. Entertainment. Design is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world. TED Radio Hour is brought to you by NPR where fascinating and insightful speakers talk about a broad range of topics from global issues such as fighting hunger to individual journeys into the source of happiness. Based on the phenomenal TED Talks series, the show is hosted by the talented and humorous Guy Raz.

Why We Love This Podcast
For folks who don’t have the time or inclination to listen to multiple TED talks in their entirety, TED Radio Hour provides the solution by cleverly condensing a few standout TED talks on relevant topics ("Happiness" for instance, or "Why we Cheat"), interspersing them with interviews of those specific TED speakers and adding insightful commentary, to present a thoroughly entertaining and thought-provoking hour of listening.
High production value and excellent variety makes it hard not to get hooked to this podcast. Educational, illuminating and inspiring, it’s a must add to your playlist.

These are three of our fave episodes from this podcast:

  1. Identities on October 11, 2013
Is identity assigned at birth? Shaped by circumstance? Or is it something we choose? This hour, TED speakers describe their journeys to answer the question: who am I?
  1. Simply Happy on February 14, 2014
We all want to find happiness, but it seems elusive. Can we learn more about happiness through science? Or are there simpler ways to achieve it? In this hour, finding happiness may be simpler than you think.
