Podcasts We Love: GenderMom’s How to Be a Girl

by Simona Terron
In the fourth part of our series on Podcasts We Love, we bring you GenderMom’s How to Be a Girl:

Who is GenderMom?
She’s a cool single mom who is documenting her and her six-year-old transgender daughter’s journey, in which they figure out, together, what it means to be a girl. GenderMom uses the pseudonym Marlo Mack to maintain her and her daughter’s anonymity (whom she calls M). She shares extremely intimate conversations and conundrums that she and her child face while navigating society’s perceptions of gender and how one should live in a predominantly binary world.

She shares that when her child was three years old, he (her son) told her that she was actually her daughter. A year of resisting the idea and wrestling with her own traumatic feelings of being an inadequately equipped parent was followed by the revelation that this really IS who her daughter is.

Here’s Mother and Daughter speaking of their amazing journey in a darling animated video:

Why We Love Her Podcast
For every parent who worries about screwing up their child beyond repair, this podcast is proof that the struggle is real. GenderMom may have an issue (her daughter being transgender) that isn’t very common but there are few mothers out there who cannot benefit from her sharing her stories in a heartfelt, gentle and very real manner.

Three of our fave episodes from her podcast:
  1. Episode I: Mama, I'm a Girl on June 7, 2014
This was the first episode where she relates how her three year old son informed her that she was actually her daughter.  “I'm now the mother of a happy, confident little transgender girl, but it took a while to get here,” says GenderMom.
  2. Episode V: Looking for Love on November 20, 2014
Her daughter’s six years old and transgender. She’s a single mom. In this episode she talks about what happens when they both hit the dating scene and compare notes about it.
  3. Episode VIII: Meeting Laverne on August 5, 2015
Earlier last year, her daughter got to meet the transgender TV star Laverne Cox. She wrote about it for her blog, and that heart-warming, feel-good post went crazy viral on the internet. Not long after, her daughter gave her first interview (to Amy Poehler's Smart Girls website), read all about it here.
