Natural Remedies to Reduce Stress

So you’re an “adult” with a home and a job, finally living the life you’ve dreamed about since college. But between work pressures, bills, dating or starting a family, and trying to figure out the whole life balance thing, you’re also stressed out of your mind.  

It’s okay. It’s part of adulting (or so I’m told). But that doesn’t mean you have to just deal, nor does it mean that a doctor’s visit complete with a new prescription for meds is on horizon. There are many herbal remedies for alleviating stress which don’t require a visit to the doctor’s office or putting things in your body that aren’t necessarily natural.

Try the “Organic Chill Pill” (a.k.a. Calcium Magnesium Capsules)

Colloquially known as an “organic chill pill”, this mineral complex is said to work to reduce stress and anxiety by calming the central nervous system.  According to Psychology Today article, “In 1968, Wacker and Parisi reported that magnesium deficiency could cause depression, behavioral disturbances, headaches, muscle cramps, seizures, ataxia, psychosis, and irritability — all reversible with magnesium repletion.”  Having taken these capsules, I can attest to their calming effect.  However, they can be really calming to the point of making you want to sleep so I recommend them as a pre-bedtime supplement, not a right-before-the-super-important-presentation supplement.

The third prong of this spear against anxiety and stress is holy basil. You likely know it as plain ol’ basil, but it’s also known as tulsi or Ocimum sanctum, and it’s a shrub that’s long been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine, one of the world’s oldest holistic practices. According to a study in the Nepal Medical College Journal, patients who took two 500mg capsules after a meal experienced lower levels of generalized anxiety.

Before you go running to Whole Foods to grab these supplements, however, remember that everyone’s physiology is different, and it’s best to confer with your doctor before taking any supplements. I’m certainly not a medical professional; however, I am a busy, stressed New Yorker who’s found some relief in these remedies. But if your own anxiety issues persist, do seek professional help and explore other issues going on.
