5 Ayurvedic Herbs To Boost Sexual Health

by Sumdima Rai

Did you know that the ancient system of Ayurveda has devoted a whole branch of medicine for the study of sex? This special branch is called ‘Vajikarana’ in Sanskrit, which has been roughly translated as aphrodisiac in the West. While aphrodisiac in the West means ‘to arouse sexual desire,’ Vajikarana in Ayurveda goes beyond sexual arousal by providing nutrition to nourish and sustain the entire reproductive system. Here are some special Ayurvedic herbs to reinvigorate and fire up your sex life.

1) Winter Cherry (Ashwagandha)
The name literally means ‘smells like a horse,’ as it is believed to impart the power of a stallion. An aphrodisiac for men, its extracts stimulate the production of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide widens the blood vessels that carry blood to the genitals, resulting in increased sexual desire. Recommended dose is 2-6gm per day.

2) Shatavari
The name shatavari means ‘she who possesses 100 husbands,’ as it is believed to increase the capacity for lovemaking. It is considered ashwagandha’s equivalent for women, wherein the herb tones and nourishes the female reproductive organs. It also maintains a healthy hormonal balance and increases fertility in women. Men can take the powdered root of the herb to reduce sexual debility, impotence and inflammation of sexual organs. Recommended dose is 2-6gm per day.

3) Flannel Weed (Bala)
The name bala means ‘strength,’ and it is believed to improve the strength of the body. This herb is especially helpful in increasing sperm count and sperm motility in men, whereas in women it acts as a very good uterine tonic. Recommended dose is 2-6gm per day.

4) Aloe Vera (Kumari)
It literally means ‘like a young girl or virgin,’ as it is believed to impart the energy of youth to the reproductive system of both men and women. The herb regulates the circulatory system, improving blood supply and erections in men. It is an excellent natural lubricant for women and helps in repairing damaged vagina walls. Recommended dose is one soup spoon of gel once each morning (with a little ginger powder if needed).

5) Velvet Bean (Kapikacchu)
This herb is especially beneficial in increasing sperm count and motility, improving semen quality and enhancing sexual libido. The recommended way of use is to make a decoction of 3-4gm per 200ml of water or milk and to drink the mixture after it cools down.

Note: One must never self-medicate a health condition. It is important to consult a doctor before taking any Ayurvedic herbs.
