5 Health Reasons To Eat More Oranges

The onset of winter brings with it oranges—it not only tastes great but packs in a bunch of powerful nutrients such as vitamin C, dietary fiber, pectin, carotenes, potassium and folic acid that are very beneficial for your body. Here are five reasons to enjoy oranges more.

1) Prevent Kidney Stones
Oranges are rich in citric acid and citrates, which prevent kidney stones from forming. Research has shown that orange juice boosts levels of citrate in the urine more than any other fruit.

2) Promote Healthy Eyes
Scientists have reported that the antioxidant properties of vitamin C in oranges promote healthy eyes. They can also  slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration and reduce the risk of cataracts.

3) Prevent Peptic Ulcers
A glass of orange juice every day is known to prevent gastric ulcers. Research has shown that higher blood levels of vitamin C could eliminate peptic ulcer-causing Helicobacter pylori infection by as much as 25 percent.

4) Relieve Rheumatoid Arthritis
Oranges contain an antioxidant known as beta-cryptoxanthin, which has been found to slow down the progression of arthritis.

5) Promote Healthy Heart
Oranges contain potassium that is essential for a healthy heart since it can reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. The fruit is also a good source of folate, which protects against heart diseases and a flavonoid called hesperidin that lowers high blood pressure.
