If you’re wondering what’s worse—chapped lips or dry skin—we’ll inevitably tell you it’s the former. While dry skin can be quite the annoyance, it’s the burning, bleeding and unavoidable unsightliness of chapped lips that really gets to us.

Now, why is it that regardless of the weather, we find ourselves with dry, and often painful lips? The truth is, the skin on our lips is thinner as compared to our hands, legs, and face. And unlike the rest of our body, our lips have no pores, which means there is no protective layer to keep the skin on our lips healthy, plump and taken care of, unless we take matters into our own hands.

A great way to see that your lips are always cared for is by using a good quality lip balm. However, not every expensive brand can be trusted blindly. At times, there are fragrances, colors and chemicals that tend to do more harm than good. This is why, we recommend making your own lip balm, and we’ve always seemed to love anything cocoa butter-based.

You’d think that something as deeply nourishing would be ideal for the colder months, but making cocoa butter the star ingredient in your year-round beauty solutions can do your skin a world of good.

Cocoa butter, a rich fat derived from the same beans as chocolate, is packed with properties that nourish the skin, particularly your lips. And because lips lack the protective outer layer and oil glands the rest of our skin has, they’re more susceptible to the elements; cocoa butter makes for the perfect little helper. The emollient properties of cocoa butter act as a protective barrier by supplying and retaining moisture in the lips. So on that note, we show you how to pamper your pucker daily, and make sure your lips are well-moisturized and soft.

Here are a few easy cocoa butter lip balm DIYs for you to try out:

Coco-Rosey Lip Balm Recipe

  • 2tbsp coconut oil
  • 1tbsp grated cocoa butter
  • 1tbsp dried rosebuds (or any dried flower, green tea, etc.)
  • 1/4tsp vitamin E oil (or 3 punctured, squeezed out vitamin E capsules)
  • 3 drops rose essential oil

On very low heat, melt the coconut oil in a small stainless steel bowl or pot. After the oil liquidizes, add your roses (or other dried flowers) and stir well. Allow to steep (again, on very low heat) for 1 hour. Strain oil into a bowl through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Wipe out your original heating pot/bowl, pour oil back in, and return to heat. Add cocoa butter and stir until melted. Remove from heat, add vitamin E oil and essential oil and stir well. Transfer to a small container and let it set for 3 hours (or until it is of the right consistency).

Cocoa Butter & Vanilla Lip Balm

  • 3tbsp pure cocoa butter
  • 1/2 cup olive oil or sweet almond oil
  • 4tbsp beeswax
  • 1tbsp honey
  • 1 vitamin E capsule
  • 5-8 drops pure vanilla essential oil

Use a double-boiler on the stove to melt the beeswax.  If you don’t have a double-boiler (or a stove!) you can put the beeswax in a glass, microwave-safe container and heat it slowly, taking it out and stirring every 25-35 seconds. Once the wax melts, add the room-temperature cocoa butter and sweet almond oil. Continue to slowly heat the mixture until the cocoa butter is melted, stirring often. Add the honey and the vanilla essential oil. Then, pierce a vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents into the mixture. Remove the mixture from the stove and pour into individual containers. Allow your new lip balm to cool for 1-2 hours before use.
