Consider this. Kids make up the largest demographic of those who dress up for Halloween. Do you really want to be putting toxic chemicals, dyes, waxes, artificial face paint and adhesives on their skin? And why just them?

Even as adults, our skin isn’t made to withstand the harsh components found in these products, so for this 31st October, we teach you how to tread with caution with some basic tips.

To seal the deal, here are some DIY beauty recipes that can give you the same dramatized effect without penetrating or harming your skin. Fake blood, face paint, hair spray and freaky nails, we have it all!

Halloween Manicure

Halloween Manicure: Fake nails and Halloween-themed talons are very popular among teenagers. While the acrylic kind can damage the nail bed, we urge you to get creative with some vegan nail paints instead. Try the metallic manicure. Simply lacquer nails with two coats of gunmetal. Allow at least five minutes for the polish to dry. Then, sweep nail adhesive over the polish. It will change from white to clear matte when dry. Finally, place a strip of gold foil (shiny side facing down over your nail), tap three to four times with your fingertip to deposit the pigment, then peel off. Repeat with the silver foil.

Homemade Face Paint

Mix together 1/2tsp cold cream, 1tsp corn starch, 1/2tsp water and 1-2 drops organic food colorant. With your finger or a sponge, apply the face paint to suit your alter ego. There are several reasons you should share this recipe with friends and family—this face paint is non-toxic, eco-friendly, organic, and does not cause skin reactions. It is perfectly safe for your child, too.

Homemade Fake Blood

Homemade Fake Blood: Instead of store-bought blood, which is cheap and oozing with chemicals, this year make your own! In a bowl, take 1 part water and 3 parts corn syrup, mix and then add red food colorant till you get the desired scarlet hue. To make it darker, add a few drops of blue and green food colorant. To make it thick, add the required amount of corn starch and stir till the lumps dissolve. Lastly, you can add chocolate syrup to give it the venous red color.

Homemade Hair Spray

Homemade Hair Spray: You have the outfit and the makeup, but your hair needs a spooky vibe, too. Swap your chemical-based hair spray with this alternative. To 1 cup boiled water add 4tsp sugar and stir till it dissolves. Let it cool and then add 6-8 drops of your favorite essential oil. Pour this liquid in a spray bottle and style away. This hair spray is cost effective and does not harm the environment. Hair sprays tend to dry the tresses; this one will add a glossy shine.

Homemade Makeup Remover

Homemade Makeup Remover: Do not go to bed without removing your makeup. In an 8oz bottle, pour 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil and top it off with aloe vera juice. Mix well and use as desired. Olive oil is packed with antioxidants and is rich in compounds like polyphenols, squalene which help fight signs of skin aging. Interestingly, even though it is dense, it doesn’t block the pores and actually induces the process of exfoliation. You can easily remove the heavy makeup that comes with Halloween.
