Helpful Tips To Prevent An Acne Breakout Post Workout

Exercising regularly brings so many benefits to our physical and mental health, and it also comes with advantages for our skin and appearance. Then, why do we end up with more acne than we normally have after becoming more regular with our exercise routine?

There could be a lot of underlying issues (besides just sweat) causing these breakouts. If you think about it, the clothes we wear, the moisturizer we put on and the towel we use to wipe our sweat off can all contribute to a breakout.

How to Prevent an Acne Breakout From Working Out

The following tips should help you prevent pimples and acne and allow you to continue sweating it out with acne-free skin.

1. Avoid working out with makeup

If you’re heading to the gym or your workout class right after work, try to wash your face and remove any makeup you might have on.

Makeup can be notorious for clogging your pores, especially when mixed with sweat. Apply a non-clogging moisturizer and you’re good to get sweating.

2. Wear clean and comfortable workout attire

Avoid putting on the same clothes that you wore for your yoga class yesterday as it has probably accumulated a lot of dead skin and bacteria that can clog your pores and increase your risk of acne formation.

Additionally, you should also be aware of the material you are wearing as certain fabrics can trap more bacteria and oils that cause breakouts on your skin.

3. Apply oil-free sunscreen pre-workout

The sun can leave you with very dry skin, which stimulates the production of oil and can cause acne. To protect your skin from the sun’s rays and acne, apply an oil-free natural sunscreen before your outdoor workout.

Look for products that are SPF 30 or higher, water resistant and have a broad spectrum that protects you from UVA and UVB rays.

4. Keep your hands away from your face

If you’re a person who sweats a lot, it can be tough not to wipe off excess sweat dripping off your face. However, try to avoid touching your face especially if you have just used any workout equipment at the public gym.

These machines and weights probably have a ton of other people’s bacteria on it, which doesn’t do you any favors when it comes to acne and pimples.

5. Use a clean towel

Make sure that the towel you use is clean and has been washed, especially if it was used by someone else.

Use the clean towel to gently dry off any excess sweat and avoid rubbing your skin when you’re trying to wipe the sweat off as this can flare up your acne.

6. Shower immediately after your workout

You don’t want to sit around for hours in your sweaty gym clothes after you have just worked out. Try to make it a habit to cleanse and rinse off immediately after your workout to remove any bacteria that you may have picked up from the gym.

Taking a shower after your workout will also leave you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of the day.

Exercise and Skin Health

Don’t let post-workout breakouts stop you from being regular with your workout routine! Your breakout is only temporary and can be fixed by making a few changes in your habits.

Exercise is beneficial for your skin in many ways:

  • Promotes blood circulation
  • Regulates hormone levels
  • Prevents damage from free-radicals
  • Dilates your pores to expel excess dirt and bacteria
