Ever wondered why your elbows and knees are a shade darker? This could either be because of the absence of oil glands in the area which makes it dry, discoloration from friction on hard surfaces, or a problem as basic as neglecting the area while you shower. Here are some natural fixes to get even-toned elbows and knees.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice contains citric acid that works as a mild bleach. Rub half a medium-sized lemon on the dark patches, leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning for visibly lighter elbows and knees.
Coconut Or Olive Oil
These oils nourish and hydrate the skin as they contain Omega-3 fatty acids. Apply 1 tbsp of either oil daily after your shower for good results.
Yogurt & Almond Powder Paste
Almond powder works well as a scrub, while the lactic acid in yogurt acts as a bleach. Grind eight to 10 almonds, add 2tbsp of plain yogurt and mix well.
Apply the pack to the darker areas and leave on for 15 minutes, before washing it off with lukewarm water. Apply twice a week for noticeable results.
Brown Sugar & Olive Oil Scrub
Make your own exfoliating scrub using 1tbsp of brown sugar, 1 tbsp of olive oil, and 1 tsp of ground ginger.
Massage it onto darker areas for five to 10 minutes, until the brown sugar has completely dissolved. Gently wipe the scrub off with a soft, wet washcloth and apply it two to three times a week.
Quick Solution
After a shower, slather heavy moisturizing cream or petroleum jelly on to your elbows and knees to keep them nourished.
How To Reduce Skin Darkening
- Do not shower in hot water, as it removes the moisture from your skin.
- Do not apply skincare products that contain alcohol and harsh chemicals; it makes the skin dry.
- Gently pat dry your elbows and knees after your shower.
Basics For An Even Skin Tone
Exfoliate
Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that have grayed over time and are lackluster.
Moisturize
After a shower, gently pat dry your elbows and knees and apply a moisturizer immediately. The lotion will not only nourish these areas, but will also help seal the residue water on your body, keeping your skin hydrated.
Not Just Skin Deep?
Extremely dry patches cause skin darkening which could be a result of underlying conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or pigmentation. See a dermatologist or skin specialist if the condition persists.
