Our immune system is a remarkable aspect of our body that does amazing things. It’s responsible for defending you against disease-causing microorganisms and keeping our body in tip top shape.

Even though your immune system serves as your first line of defense, sometimes it fails and germs can invade your body and make you sick. But, is there a way you can help strengthen your immune system?

Your immune system is, in fact, a system as opposed to a single entity, so in order for it to function at the best of its abilities, it will require balance throughout your body. This includes having a healthy and nutrient-filled diet and doing away with bad habits that can hinder your health.

Surprisingly, there are no scientifically proven direct links between lifestyle and enhanced immune function yet. But just because there hasn’t been much research to prove any direct links doesn’t mean there won’t be, so in the meantime, fostering general healthy-living strategies are a good way to start giving your immune system the attention it needs.

Simple Tips to Strengthen Your Immune System

1. Cigarettes and tobacco smoke impairs basic immune functions and raises the risk of bronchitis and pneumonia in everyone and middle ear infections in kids. So, try cutting back on the cigarettes and avoid tobacco smoke as much as possible.

2. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, which will provide your body with the nutrients your immune system needs. A study revealed that increasing fruit and vegetable intake improved antibody response to the Pneumovax vaccine, which protects against Streptococcus pneumonia in older adults.

3Excessive drinking impairs the immune system and increases vulnerability to lung infections. Don’t drink as much alcohol to help keep your immune system healthy.

4. Make sure you get enough sleep and manage stress because sleep deprivation and stress can increase the hormone cortisol, which suppresses immune function over time.

5. Eat more raw garlic. Garlic is an antimicrobial agent and immune booster. Add it to foods just before serving because heat deactivates a key active ingredient needed for immune support.

6. Take steps to avoid infections and illnesses especially during the fall season. Make sure you keep your distance from anyone sick and don’t forget to constantly wash your hands.

7. Consider taking probiotics. Studies show that probiotic supplements reduce the risk of catching respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Fermented milk products have also been shown to reduce respiratory infections in adults and kids.

8. Try immune-boosting herbs. If you keep catching infections, consider taking immune-supportive herbs such as eleuthero, Asian ginseng or astragalus.

Consistency is always the key to making sure you remain healthy. Don’t forget to talk to your doctor about different options you can try to help boost your immune system and always remember to research any natural or alternative remedy before trying it.
