When it comes to having a fabulous body and a flawless, natural complexion at any age, Brooke Shields is at the top of our list. Considered to be one of the most beautiful women on Earth, she was one of the original supermodels and movie icons of the ‘70s and ‘80s. In fact, her list of arm candy included some of the most powerful men in the world—think John F Kennedy Jr, Liam Neeson, the Prince of Monaco, tennis superstar Andre Agassi—before she finally settled down with screenwriter Chris Henchy to start a family. From her teenage years to now, she’s been the cover girl on scores of magazines from Vogue to Shape, and even Time, and the poster child for beauty and fitness worldwide.

This weekend, on 31st May 2015 to be precise, the actress and style icon turns the big 50, and is just as stunning as she was almost three decades ago. Aside from those obvious good genes and 6ft frame, we find out what it takes to look as fabulous as Brooke at this age. Make note, the key is to start early; your lifestyle, dietary choices and skincare habits of today, will define the outcome of tomorrow.

Work It Like Brooke: The 50-year-old continues to flaunt enviable body tone, much like that of someone in their 20s. As a mother of two young kids, she knows it can be difficult to find the time to workout every day; but if you want to stay healthy and look great, her mantra is that you have to come up with a dedicated fitness plan and stick with it.

It’s important to exercise for an hour at least, and do a combination of cardio and strength training exercises to burn calories. A big fan of spinning (indoor group cycling) classes, Brooke also recommends fun activities like tennis, running, hiking, swimming, dancing or even surfing, at least three times a week, in order to stay in shape.

Give ‘Om’ A Chance: Brooke credits doing yoga with keeping her looking and feeling young. She’s trained with celebrity yoga guru Mandy Ingber and even tried the nation’s newest fad, Bikram Yoga, where one strikes yoga poses in 105°F sizzling heat!

Yoga keeps the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems functioning optimally, tightens your skin and also protects you from the ravages of stress.

You Are What You Eat: The gorgeous brunette emphasizes that it’s important to watch what you eat and when you eat it. To kick-start the day, breakfast consists of essential vitamins, protein and complex carbs—eggs paired with whole wheat toast, and a fresh fruit smoothie does the job nicely. The rest of the day, her diet consists of eating smaller meals at lunch and dinner time, complemented by healthy snacks in between, which are low in calories, sodium, and fat—think yogurt with honey.

It’s also important to drink plenty of water throughout the day, as it will help control calories and cravings, and also keep your skin hydrated.

Beauty Is Not Just Skin Deep: In 2009, Brooke had a skin cancer scare, and is now meticulous about protecting her body. Her daily routine includes moisturizing in the morning and at night with at least SPF30 protection; this is important, particularly if you are going to be out in the sun.

Remember to use a moisturizer on your face that is suited to your specific skin type, and don’t forget to apply it to your arms, legs, and neck too.

Hairy-Tales: The brunette’s luscious locks are a result of washing her hair on a regular basis; think minimum three times a week. Also, condition thoroughly if you want to keep your locks from drying out. Wash your hair in lukewarm or cool water to keep it healthy—the hotter the water is, the more damage you could do to your hair roots. Brush your hair twice a day from the bottom up, trim frequently, and indulge in hydrating hair masks every other weekend.

Nap Time: Not just exercise, but getting enough sleep every night is the most important thing for a healthy lifestyle says Brooke. In fact, research has shown that over time, short sleepers gained 58% more around their waists and 124% more body fat than the average sleeper.

Follow Brooke’s example and have a consistent bedtime routine so that you get a full eight hours of uninterrupted shut-eye. Keep the bedroom dark and cool, and turn off all electronics when you’re ready for bed. Also, avoid caffeine, soda, alcohol or any other stimulants before bedtime. If all else fails, try a warm bath, some soft music, or even a cup of herbal tea to usher yourself into slumber mode.

That said, we understand the actress’ routine may not be easy to keep up with; but, you’ve got to admit, most of it is doable. Start by working on one thing, and as it becomes second nature, include the next until you’ve got the process pat down. After all, wouldn’t you like to like just as gorgeous as Brooke at 50?
