Jivamukti Yoga | The Path to Enlightenment

Jivamukti Yoga teaches the importance of your relationship with others and teaches that relationships between individuals (Asana) should be mutually beneficial and should always stem from a consistent (Sthira) place of joy and happiness (Sukham).

Origin of Jivamukti Yoga

Co-founded in New York by dancer and musician Sharon Gannon and her partner, artist and cafe owner David Life, Jivamukti yoga was introduced to yogis in 1984 and leads individuals on the path to enlightenment through compassion and happiness.

Derived from Sanskrit, ‘Asana’ means ‘connection’ that is the relationship to the Earth (all of life). The practice of the Asana goes beyond the just physical aspect of improving strength and flexibility.

Jivamukti yoga also focuses on improving the relationships between others and destroys the belief in separateness. The individuals realize the oneness of being and, therefore, discovers everlasting happiness.

5 Tenets of Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti yoga’s core philosophy is expressed through five tenets. which form its foundation.

The five tenets, not presented in any particular order of importance, are:

The environment, including animals and all other living beings, should be treated with non-violence and compassion. Ahimsa emphasizes ethical vegetarian or veganism and promotes animal rights.

Bhakti acknowledges that self-realization and the belief in God is the objective of most yoga practices. Individuals set an intention for the practice and devote their postures and pose to their intentions.

Includes meditation where the individuals connect to their unchanging reality and become more aware of their mind and body.

Nada involves deep listening that fosters wholeness of the mind and body. This deep listening can be achieved through music, works, or simply following the instructor’s voice.

Shastra explores the four central paths of yoga — Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Upanishads. These texts are studied in Sanskrit, the original language that they were written in.
