Menopause is often the most common reason for night sweats in women. However, while it does play a major role in causing night sweats, there are a number of other problems that could make you break out in a sweat.

1. Menopause
This is the most common cause of a night sweat. While earlier menopause would hit you once you reached your 40s, it can now hit you as early as in your 30s. During menopause, the levels of the estrogen hormone decreases, causing your period to stop. This change in hormonal balance often leads to night sweats.

2. Cancer
In some cases, a night sweat is one of the earliest symptoms of cancer, the most common type being lymphoma.

3. Low Blood Sugar
This happens mostly in cases of diabetes and while taking insulin medication.

4. Infections
You are likely to suffer from night sweats when you have certain infections such as tuberculosis. Others such as bone inflammation, HIV, bacterial infection and inflammation of the heart valves can also cause night sweats.

5. Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis
This is a condition in which your body produces a lot of sweat, but without any obvious medical reason.

6. Medications
Certain medications can cause your body to sweat more than you otherwise would. Anti-depressants, medications related to mental health and well-being and certain medications that help reduce temperature or pain could also result in night sweats.

7. Hormonal Conditions
Fluctuations in your hormones can lead to conditions like hyperthyroidism, which can further lead to night sweats.

8. Sleep Apnea
This is a condition where you experience difficulty in breathing while sleeping, leading to sleep disturbance. This condition also commonly causes night sweats.

9. Anxiety & Stress
These can lead to a disturbance in rest and sleep, further causing night sweats.

10. Other Causes
Some other possible causes of night sweating are temperature fluctuations in the room, if your room is stuffy and does not have sufficient air circulation, fabrics that are not comfortable for sleep time, spicy food or hot beverages closer to bed time, and excessive exercising before bedtime.

Changing your room temperature, wearing comfortable and loose clothes while sleeping, and eating a light dinner can help bring down your body temperature and cause less night sweats. If you are experiencing too much sweating at night, get yourself tested to check for any underlying medical conditions.
