A stiff neck is uncomfortable and can be very painful. You could experience an inability to move your neck comfortably, feel like there is strong pressure on one side, or have sharp shooting pains targeting the area around the neck. The discomfort you experience can negatively impact your day-to-day life.

What Causes A Stiff Neck?

If you are suffering from a stiff neck, you are not alone. Many individuals lead lifestyles that are prone to developing a stiff neck. Treatment can be easy and alleviate pain within a few minutes or a few days, depending on how severe your stiff neck is. If pain and stiffness persist, however, it might be a sign of a more severe condition.

Sitting in front of your laptop, sleeping in the wrong position or other underlying medical conditions can all lead to a stiff neck. Causes of a stick neck include, but are not limited to:

Natural remedies can be very effective in treating a stiff neck. We have 8 ways for you to try:

1. Neck Massage

You can do it yourself, or ask someone in your house to give you a gentle massage on your neck and the surrounding areas. A good massage will help alleviate some pain and loosen the tension in your muscles. Giving your neck a message will enable blood circulation and induce relaxation, resulting in a good night’s sleep.

2. Peppermint Oil

The menthol present in peppermint oil can be very effective in treating neck pain. Peppermint oil also contains analgesic properties that help alleviate pain and discomfort. Add a few drops of peppermint oil to the painful area and massage gently for 10–15 minutes.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of apple cider vinegar can help reduce muscles soreness and pain experienced in the neck. Apple cider vinegar is an effective remedy and very easy to try. All you have to do is dampen a clean cloth with vinegar and gently dab it on the neck.

4. Cold Press

Place an ice pack on the area that is sore. The cold temperature should soothe the pain and avoid the buildup of lactic acid in the muscles to stop the reoccurrence of pain. If you are unable to find an ice pack, a bag of frozen veggies should do the trick.

5. Heat Therapy

Heat therapy is an alternative method to the cold press. Take a hot shower, positioning the shower head to target your neck area. You can also use a heating pad to relieve pain. In both scenarios, the hot temperature will initiate blood circulation and relax the muscles in the area causing the pain to subside.

6. Change Your Pillow

If you keep waking up during the night or waking up every morning feeling stiff and uncomfortable, it could be your pillow that is causing you pain. You might be using a very old pillow that doesn’t support your neck like it should be when you are asleep.

Switch out your old pillow for a new one that has good support, such as a memory foam pillow.

7. Epsom Salt

A stiff neck is a good excuse to take a nice long bath. To alleviate the pain, add a couple cups of Epsom salt to your bath and keep your neck immersed in the water. The magnesium present in Epsom salt reduces the tension and stress in the muscles and gets the blood flowing in your neck.

8. Stretching

Practice stretching when you are sitting at work, or while watching tv at home. Exercises, like rolling your shoulders up and down or stretching your neck from side to side, can help to loosen up the muscles and may even prevent a stiff neck from occurring in the future.

Make sure you visit your doctor if you experience continuous pain for an extended duration of time. It is always better to get a second opinion and to fix the issue before a condition progresses.
