Eczema affects more than 30 million people every year. As common as it seems, having eczema is embarrassing and can make you feel like you’re the only one.

Eczema is accompanied by dry and itchy, red skin. In some cases, people struggling with eczema might have blisters that tend to leak fluid.

The underlying cause of eczema is unclear and can be different for everyone, but a combination of contributing factors like genetics, a toxic environment, and the strength of your immune system are all believed to play a role.

What Are the Symptoms of Eczema?

The symptoms of eczema can be classified as skin irritations, including:

  • Red rash
  • Dry, rough, patches on your skin
  • Blistering (sometimes with fluid leaking)
  • Painful cracks in the skin

What Causes Eczema?

The initial cause of eczema is unknown, but scientists and dermatologists alike believe that eczema can be a product of a toxic environment. Exposure to toxic household products like soap, laundry detergent, perfume, or allergens like dust and pollen can all contribute to eczema.

Heredity can also be a contributing factor as well. People who have family members who have eczema, allergies, or asthma are at a greater risk of developing the skin condition themselves.

Your skin serves as a shield against allergins, toxins, and bacteria, but when you’re struggling with eczema, your skin tends to dry out and become brittle, allowing irritants to affect your skin.

Other causes of eczema include asthma symptoms, stress, and anxiety. Cold temperatures, dry weather, and even synthetic fiber or wool can contribute to eczema, too.
