When we breathe, air enters our lungs through the airways and is sucked down into the bronchi—the branches of the lungs—to reach the alveoli (air sacs). The alveoli are the point of exchange of gases. The alveoli release oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Emphysema is a condition which crops up when the alveoli get damaged and are unable to open properly making it difficult for gases to be exchanged. It left untreated, the lungs lose their elasticity leading to a decreased supply of oxygen into the bloodstream. It can result in breathlessness and coughing even at the slightest exertion.

Emphysema develops over a period of years and cigarette smoking is thought to be its predominant cause. However, there are certain home remedies that can easily help you manage the condition better. Here are four home remedies that we recommend.

Cloves

Cloves: Being rich in antioxidants, cloves have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties that can come handy when treating respiratory illnesses. Add two crushed cloves to a cup of boiling water and simmer on low heat for five minutes. Strain and add one teaspoon of honey to this tea. Drink it thrice daily to relieve emphysema and ease breathing.

Eucalyptus Oil: Eucalyptus has analgesic, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve the lung muscles and help dissolve mucus, thereby freeing the airways of any obstruction. Sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a clean handkerchief and inhale the fumes three to four times a day to find relief from emphysema.

Mustard Oil

Mustard Oil: Mustard oil is renowned for its antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Warm three tablespoons of mustard oil and massage your back and chest for twenty minutes with it. After the massage, wrap yourself with a woolen cloth for half an hour. Mustard oil will help dissolve the phlegm making it easier to breathe. Do this twice daily.
