Scabies, also known as the seven-year itch, is a contagious skin infestation caused by a tiny microscopic bug known as the human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei). This mite is usually passed on when anyone comes in contact with a person who is infected with scabies.
Scabies can cause severe itching, blistering and peeling of the skin. However, you can control the itch and other symptoms with some simple home remedies. Here’s how you can use onions, garlic, neem, turmeric and walnut to control the itching and manage the skin condition effectively.
Onion: Onions have antimicrobial properties that help fight skin infections such as scabies. They contain quercetin, a flavonoid that is a powerful antioxidant which can heal and soothe the skin. Take four cups of water and add five to six onion skins to it. Boil for 15 minutes and allow to cool. Apply this mix to the affected area using a cotton ball.
Garlic: The antibiotic and antiparasitic properties of garlic can come handy in fighting scabies. Crush two cloves of garlic and have them with a glass of warm water twice daily to find relief from scabies and its debilitating symptoms.
Neem: Neem has antiviral and antiparasitic properties that prove useful when dealing with skin infections. Prepare a paste of 10 neem leaves and apply to the affected skin. Leave this for an hour and wash off with water. Do this twice daily to get relief from scabies.
Turmeric: A common household spice, turmeric’s antibacterial properties can help curtail scabies and other skin infections. Mix two teaspoons of turmeric powder with a little water to prepare a paste. Apply this on the skin and leave for half an hour. Do this twice daily to relieve itching caused by scabies.
Walnuts: Walnuts contain juglone, a compound that can help get rid of mites that cause scabies. Put three whole walnuts in two cups and water and boil till it is reduced to half. Apply this liquid over the affected skin using a cotton ball for relief.
