Acne scars can be a burden to get rid of and it could also hinder your confidence and prohibit you from participating in certain activities. The good news is, by finding out what causes your acne scars will help you choose the necessary ingredients needed to get rid of them.

What Is Acne Scarring?

The phrase “acne scar” refers to a fibrous process where new collagen is produced to heal an injury that occurred on your face, and by injury, we mean one related to popping a pimple. After the inflamed acne lesions have healed, postinflammatory color changes or hyperpigmentation occurs ranging from pink, purple, to white and brown will start to take its place.

Although no two acne scars are alike, there are common forms of acne scars that we should all become familiar with.

Type of Acne Scars

There are five common acne scars that can occur on the face. These acne scars include the following.

  1. Ice-pick scars: deep, narrow and pitted scars
  2. Rolling scars: wide impressions with sloping edges
  3. Boxcar scars: wide impressions with sharp and defined edges
  4. Atrophic scars: flat and thin scars
  5. Keloid scars: thick and lumpy scars

What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars are caused by an inflamed lesion like pustules, papules or cysts. Inflamed blemishes occur when the pore or follicle becomes clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. The pore starts to swell resulting in a break in the follicle wall.
