When there is a buildup of unhealthy toxins in our body, you might not experience any complications at the moment, but over time it can put a strain on your health. These excess toxins can eventually cause many mental and physical health issues like chronic fatigue, insomnia, headaches and other serious diseases.

Believe it or not, a lot of these toxins come from things like the foods you consume and the products you use every day. Considering how much we expose ourselves to a variety of different toxins, it’s imperative to detox the body on a consistent basis in order to stay healthy.

What Is a Detox?

A detox is a process or period of time when an individual abstains from consuming or using any products that are toxic or unhealthy for the body.

What Happens If We Don’t Detox

Although the body has the ability to detox on its own through the different organs like the liver, skin and bladder, an overload of toxins can occur and prevent the organs from properly functioning.

Our bodies are a biological engine. Think of toxins like dirt in that engine. You don’t have to be a mechanic to know that an engine cannot run or communicate to its parts correctly with dirt in it. The communication between the four major systems in our body is critical to its proper function.

These four systems are the following:

  1. Endocrine system
  2. Immune system
  3. Liver
  4. Gut

If any of these systems are compromised, our body cannot function to the best of its abilities. The liver, for example, is the detoxifier of the body and when it is bombarded with toxins it cannot function to its full capacity, which means it cannot:

  • produce antioxidants responsible for preventing cancer
  • detoxify fat-soluble hormones
  • breakdown hormones like estrogen and insulin
  • promote weight loss

These are just a few examples of the health conditions you’ll encounter if you don’t detox on a daily basis. Considering all the risks accompanied by an overload of toxins in your body, wouldn’t you want to try it? If not, maybe knowing the benefits of detoxing would make you want to change your mind.

Benefits of Detoxing

Odds are that you’ve heard of detoxing the body, but have you ever tried it yourself? If you have been contemplating detoxing, learning about the benefits of detoxing might help you come to a conclusion.

Aside from ridding your body of toxins, detoxing provides a number of health advantages that can benefit your skin, cognitive functions and so much more.

1. Aids in Weight Loss

Trying a detox diet can help foster healthier habits to eliminate all the fatty and processed foods that contain toxins and contribute to weight gain. Detoxing can also help with long-term weight management by helping you keep off the weight that you’ve recently lost.

2. Assists Your Internal Organs

Detoxing helps your body expel toxins that your organs may not be able to and gives the organs that are responsible for waste removal a break.

3. Cognitive Function

The benefits of detoxing are not only physical — it helps promote mental health as well. The sugar crashes and other negative effects of an unhealthy diet can affect your cognitive function.

By switching to a detoxifying diet, you will notice how clearer your thoughts will be and how much your memory will improve.

Aside from the mentioned benefits, detoxing your body can also propose the following advantages:

  • Clearer skin
  • Healthier immune system
  • Fresher breath
  • Healthier hair
  • Boosts energy
  • Promotes healthy digestion
  • Delays signs of premature aging

How to Detox

Detoxing is a simple process, but it requires a mental and physical adjustment, which means you have to do away with negative thoughts, food and products that aren’t benefiting you.

A diet that supports detoxification consists mainly of organic, fresh vegetables and fruits with drinking a lot of water. Exercise is also a great detoxifier and increasing the probiotics in your diet will help detoxify your digestive system. Detoxing can benefit anyone who’s willing to make a change, but you should consult with your doctor before making this adjustment.
