Why You Should Add Lutein in Your Diet

If your favorite breakfast item happens to be eggs, not only have you been getting a good dose of protein, but you’ve also been getting a dose of a naturally occurring carotenoid known as lutein.

Primarily known to maintain eye health, lutein is found in many fruits and vegetables, as well as egg yolks.  Out of the 600 carotenoids found in nature, lutein is one of two carotenoids that fights free radicals that cause macular degeneration and cataracts.

The most effective way for the body to obtain lutein is through a healthy diet. A yummy green smoothie with kale, celery, oranges, and carrots is just one way of sneaking lutein into your body every morning.

1. Fights Macular Degeneration

Lutein is an effective treatment for cataracts or macular degeneration that leads to blindness. Consuming foods that are rich in lutein has also shown to reduce eye fatigue, light sensitivity, and strengthen the tissues around the eyes. It also keeps the lens and retina of the eyes at the right densities.

2. Promotes Heart Health

Recent studies have shown that lutein can help prevent clogging of the arteries in the neck and protects the heart from heart attacks. The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties present in lutein lower inflammation in the heart, reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

3. Lowers the Risk of Cancer

The connection between lutein and cancer is that lutein occurs in many of the foods, like leafy greens and citrus fruits, that are rich in antioxidants and other powerful nutrients. By consuming these foods for lutein content, you are also boosting your intake of cancer-fighting ingredients.
