Here’s another reason to enjoy a glass of red wine. A new study has suggested that red wine may protect against age-related issues by stimulating an ancient evolutionary defense mechanism in the body. Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) claim that moderate consumption of red wine could evoke a protective effect in the body.

Red wine contains a substance called resveratrol, which has been touted as the elixir of youth. It can powerfully activate an evolutionary stress response in the human cells. Resveratrol is an organic compound found in grapes, nuts, cacao beans and a variety of edible plants. It has already been associated with extending the healthy life of lab animals, and also the decreasing incidence of heart disease in humans.

So don’t worry about throwing back a couple of glasses this holiday season.
