We’ve discussed how the media tends to influence women in a number of ways, particularly when it comes to appearances.

And now, a new study has revealed that body shaming has been taken to the next level, what with calorie counting and weight stigmas leading teens to form unhealthy eating habits and not get the necessary nutrition.

For the purpose of the study, researchers observed if placing images of vegetables on school lunch trays made an impact on the eating habits of teenagers. Though they found that placing images of carrots and green beans did increase the vegetable intake during lunch, it wasn’t consistent with the government-recommend dietary guidelines.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association by researchers at the University of Minnesota, details how unhealthy eating practices are linked to deceptive food marketing practices used to get them to eat junk food—including dishonest labeling.

Another negative practice that leads to unhealthy eating practices is calorie counting to lose weight, or the negative portrayals of overweight and obese people in television and films.

According to Christopher Bryan, professor of psychology at the University of California at San Diego, “It gets tricky when trying to nudge teens in a similar direction, if only because they’re notoriously uninterested in healthy eating. Healthy eating practices have to be linked to something teens already care about.”
