Fall season has fallen upon us and who wouldn’t want their humble abode to smell like a crisp autumn breeze, or better yet a pumpkin spice latte? Without the extra calories, of course.
While everyone is out completing their autumn chores or looking for the perfect pumpkin to carve, bring the fall season in the right way by using a homemade air freshener that will make your home feel like home to anyone who walks in.
While it may be easier to just buy a scented candle or a fall inspired air freshener at the store, many of them contain harmful ingredients that are a hazard to you and your loved ones.
What’s In Your Air Fresheners?
Most air fresheners sold at your local stores use harsh chemicals to eliminate or overpower odors. Many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat your nasal passages, temporarily blocking your sense of smell, and in the long run, lead to a variety of health issues.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most store-bought air fresheners contain formaldehyde, petrochemicals, p-dichlorobenzene and aerosol pollutants. The agency’s “Indoor Guide to Air Quality” also notes that air fresheners “release pollutants more or less continuously.”
These chemicals can cause headaches, nausea and the aggravation of asthma and have been linked to neurological damage and cancer. Dispersants known as phthalates in most store-bought freshener sprays can cause hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders.
Considering all that you could be exposing yourself to by using commercially sold air fresheners, why not try making your own that is completely natural and contains ingredients that are not going to expose you to any toxic ingredients.
