We live in a wireless world, where we’re constantly hooked on to the Internet through our smartphones, tablets and laptops. With the advent of social media, it’s now de rigueur to let the world know what you thought, read, saw, ate or bought, as soon as you can. This often leads to an obsessive need to stay connected on your devices, and could be extremely stressful for both, the mind and body. Perhaps it’s time you switched off, disconnected and got your much-needed digital detox.

Is It Time?
Dependency on electronic gadgets could spell a hi-tech addiction that’s difficult to kick. Studies show that this kind of addiction could lead to depression, insomnia and weight gain. While it’s perfectly okay to use the smartphone to work smarter, don’t dismiss the dangers of a digital overdose. Constant headaches, strained eyesight and a shortened attention span are all signs you’ve had enough of the digital domain. High levels of stress are often a warning sign of a potential burnout. Don’t overlook these signs, as they may be related to your digital overdose. You need to reclaim your time instead of constantly struggling to keep up.

For A Quick Detox
Plan ahead. Fix a day when you will switch off all your devices. Be sure to inform everyone who needs to know and give them the emergency contact details. Now, for the fun part—switch off. Create a list of activities that you will indulge in to make the most of the spare time. Read that book you’ve always wanted to, or visit a park with the kids. Do things you will genuinely enjoy to avoid the temptation of switching on your devices. Try it for a day and do it on a regular basis: one hour a day, one day a week and move on to bigger time slots eventually.

For A Longer Detox
If you need help with the process, you could check into a summer camp for adults at Camp Grounded—a place where digital devices, networking and talking about work are strictly forbidden and traded for fun activities. You could also check out Wanderlust’s multi-day festivals or short getaways that combine yoga, music and healthy food to create a holistic healing experience. You could also explore the option of attending a yoga retreat with either Yoga Adventures, The Trip Tribe or Bella Retreats.

Restore Balance In Your Life
Those who have taken the leap and experienced a digital detoxification come back feeling refreshed, re-energized and ready to take on the world. Not only does it remind you of the smaller joys you tend to take for granted, but it also gives you fresh perspective and recharges your creative energies. The time spent with family and friends helps renew and maintain social ties, and the time spent alone is priceless, of course. It does your emotional health a big favor.
