Q: How can I handle my teenage girl’s constant requests for expensive things?
A: We certainly live in a commercial culture and teenagers are some of our population’s biggest consumers.  Teen spending in the US amounts to more than $200 billion dollars, with more than 25.6 million teen-age consumers.  But materialism isn’t necessarily about greed.  According to researchers, materialism among teens if often linked to self-esteem.  Studies have shown that teens who have strong social and emotional support, especially from parents, and who are happier are less materialistic.  Building and maintaining a good relationship and communication with your teen will go a long way not only to reducing materialism but to improving your overall interactions!
