It’s already an established fact that spending more time in the outdoors can have a profound impact on your health. Now, a new study claims that this habit can particularly benefit your well-being in the later years of your life.

Nature is known to promote physical, mental and spiritual healing, and green and blue spaces promote feelings of renewal, restoration and spiritual connectedness. Published in the journal Health and Place, the study suggests incorporating smaller features, like a koi pond or a bench with a view of flowers in public spaces. This could have a positive impact on public health. More importantly, urban development strategies could optimize nature as a health resource for older adults.

One of the researchers said that accessibility to everyday green and blue spaces encourages seniors to simply step outdoors. This, in turn, motivates them to be active physically, spiritually and socially, which can offset chronic illness, disability and isolation.

Natural environments enable older adults to uphold daily structure in retirement, and provide opportunities for diverse activities outside the home. This benefits the quality of your later years by decreasing boredom and loneliness, as well as boosting the sense of purpose and accomplishment, the study said.
