Summer in the US is always festival season, and practically every state has unique events going on. There’s something for everyone’s tastes, from food trucks to pig roasts to even strawberry and spinach festivals. We find you the best summer food festivals, those that are worth traveling the country for.

1. Austin Ice Cream Festival
Nothing says summer like ice cream. This Austin festival is a tribute to the summer treat. Participate in an ice cream-making contest or an ice cream-eating one, or show off your creative side in the popsicle stick sculpture contest. There is of course, lots of ice cream in every possible flavor.
When: August 8
Where: Austin, Texas

2. Pittston Tomato Festival
The four-day event gives you the opportunity to enjoy a tomato festival without having to travel to Spain. The tomato fights are held in teams and feature home-grown Pittson tomatoes. There is live entertainment, a 5K run, a tomato-themed parade, a farmer’s market, the annual tomato contest (prizes given to largest, smallest, ugliest and the most perfect fruit) and a sauce contest with blind tastings for festival-goers.
When: August 20 to 23
Where: Pittson, Pennsylvania

3. Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off
This is easily America’s biggest free rib festival and rib cook-off. Sparks’ Victorian Square transforms into an art and crafts fair with carnival rides, live music, and great food in September. The event sells about 100 tons of ribs. The highlight of course, is the rib-eating contest, where people have 12 minutes to eat as many ribs as possible—the record is 9.8 pounds, think you can beat that?
When: September 2 to 7
Where: Sparks, Nevada

4. Spinach Festival
Popeye would love it, but here’s why we recommend this fest for you too. Once called the “spinach capital of the world”, Lenexa, Kansas stays true to the nomenclature by hosting a spinach gala each year. The menu boasts the world’s largest spinach salad (150 pounds), green lemonade, green popcorn and tons of spinach dishes—even dessert! Apart from that, there’s an arts and antiques show, cooking demos, a baby crawling contest, and a spinach recipe contest to look forward to.
When: September 12
Where: Lenexa, Kansas

5. Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival
If your summer is about beer and barbecue, then this is where you ought to be. This traveling festival (it starts in Manhattan in January, and will end in Tyson, Virginia, in September) offers 60 different beers, 40 bourbons, and truckloads of yummy grills. There’s also unlimited beer and bourbon tastings, live music, and what they call ‘the shrine of swine’.
When: Until September 19
Where: Tyson, Virginia

6. World Food & Music Festival
Every year, for the last 10 years, this grand festival has brought the world on a platter to Des Moines. What began as a celebration of Iowa’s rich agricultural heritage now hosts food vendors and cooking demonstrations of varied cuisines. This year, expect Mesopotamian, Latin American, Dutch, Laotian, Asian, Ethiopian, Korean, French, Indian and Moroccan fare. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the food along with live dance and music.
When: September 18 to 20
Where: Des Moines, Iowa
